Sanderson's record Kickstarter took years of quiet prep

Kickstarter's own data and retrospective show a $41.75 million campaign built on an existing fanbase and a 30-person publisher.

The writer's problem

An author weighing crowdfunding against a traditional or self-publishing route is regularly pointed to Brandon Sanderson's 2022 Kickstarter as proof the model can work at scale. The campaign's own page records that Surprise! Four Secret Novels launched 1 March 2022 with a $1,000,000 goal, ran for a month, and closed 31 March 2022 with $41,754,153 pledged by 185,341 backers. The question a writer actually needs answered is not whether that total is real, but what specifically produced it, since the figure alone offers no guidance for a smaller campaign.

What the documents show

Kickstarter's own retrospective post, written by the platform's former Head of Publishing, states that the four novels were already written before launch, that the project page laid out a concrete production and delivery timeline, and that Dragonsteel Entertainment, Sanderson's independent publishing company, employed 30 team members handling design, production and shipping logistics. It states Kickstarter notified 29,778 backers of Sanderson's prior leatherbound-edition campaign on launch day, and that Sanderson had built a public following of more than 330,000 YouTube subscribers plus years of blog, forum and convention engagement predating the campaign. The retrospective frames the record total as the outcome of an existing audience, a track record of delivering rewards from an earlier $6.8 million campaign, and a deliberately secret announcement timed to maximize surprise, not as a generic result of listing a book project on the platform. The two documents describe the same campaign from different angles: the project page gives the audited totals, and the retrospective explains the preparation behind them.

The editorial choice

An editor covering crowdfunding as an option for authors should present this case explicitly as an outlier built on years of prior audience-building and existing production infrastructure, not as a repeatable formula. The retrospective itself concludes it would be tough for most authors to replicate this level of success, worth citing directly rather than only quoting the dollar total. Separating the mechanical parts of the campaign, manuscripts finished, a rewards timeline set, a team to fulfil it, from the parts tied to Sanderson's years of public fan engagement gives a more useful picture than the headline number alone.

What stays with the author

Neither document says what a first-time author without an existing mailing list, following or production company should expect from a Kickstarter campaign; the sources describe one exceptional case, not a benchmark. Building the audience, finishing the manuscript before asking for funding, and arranging fulfilment are the author's own responsibilities regardless of platform, and the retrospective's own list of contributing factors works as a checklist for evaluating readiness, not as a guarantee.

  • Was the product already finished before the campaign asked backers to fund it?
  • Does the campaign rely on an audience built over years, or one assembled for the launch alone?
  • Who is responsible for fulfilling the rewards, and what is their track record?

Kickstarter's own figures and its own retrospective agree on what happened in March 2022: a long-prepared, well-resourced campaign backed by an existing fan base produced a record total. They do not describe a mechanism any other author can simply reproduce.
